Hello all,
This was meant to be a nice simple build, but end up a sodding nightmare in the end!!!! I thought it would be nice to try and give it a bit of extra effort on this build, try and make it a looker. You get two different decal options with this kit US Navy or Greek air force. I was tempted to try the Greek option but thought I wanted a US plane, white is always a challenge.
|
This is the bait picture to get you to have a closer look at this post, not bad you might think, well read on sir! |
|
The build was not an issue, it was a tail sitter so I loaded it up with about six grammes of nuts and stuff and filled every bit of nose space, so much that I had to cut the legs of the new Revell NATO pilots that I had painted to fit in.
I thought I would try my hand at masking. I had already sprayed the plane gloss white which nearly went without a hitch. |
|
I have had problems with the colour orange before so thought I would buy a spray can of it and see how it goes. I have Gnat in the stash so the colour will not be wasted. At this point I think everything is going well! |
|
Here we have skipped the horror of unmasking and finding the orange has leaked on to the white, a rather bodged job of covering can been seen if you look really hard. I have left the canopy mask on till I have sprayed the final coat of gloss varnish, been caught like that before. |
|
Once the canopy mask is off the horror of leaking gloss paint (that has hardened) all over the canopy, not a f?£king again!!!!!! |
|
On the plus side the decals went on like a dream all thing considered. |
|
From a distance this looks like a good job but I know I am not happy with it, I learnt a few things mind you so not a total waste of time, I think I was just upping for a better result. |
|
The pilots weren't bad and I did manage to make the ejector seat pull cords. |
|
I have bought myself the new Italeri carrier deck diorama base and was planning on putting this on it but because it a crap job I will wait for something better to mount on it, that and the fact I have to build and paint the bloody thing. |
|
The base is a bit of paper printed of the Internet which does just a good enough job for this pain in the arse. |
I would like to buy another one of these and hand paint the bloody thing in Greek camo and hope it turns out better than this. I might try paint mask again for the canopy of my next build.
NORMALLY I SAY PLEASE CLICK ON IMAGES FOR A LARGER VIEW BUT NOT THIS TIME! ANY COMMENTS ARE STILL MORE THAN WELCOME THOUGH LOL!
Cheers for looking, Rich.

very nice jet... that is a really bright orange you used, I like the finished result very much
Looks good to me. Very colourful.
So how do you solve the leaking-under-the-masking problem?
Cheers lads
That is a very good question mate, and if I find out I will let you know lol.
Thanks mate.
Ah, ok then!
All I can think of is running a point along the edge of the masking tape and hoping, I will let you know how I get on mate.
A beautiful plane-build!
If only mate, I saw a Greek one of these on the ATF so watch out for the next one!
A first look at that model would never unveil the horrors you've been through with it ;)
What did you use? Tamiya masking tape?
Regards,
Mojo
Cheers Mojo, it was the evil Tamiya tape.
Hi Rich, other than those tiny issues I think you have done a fine job.
Use the two foot rule mate for this scale. On the very plus side the white looks a treat.
Keep at it!
From a distance it doesn't look bad. I think you're just a bit to hard for yourself!
Good paintjob!
Greetings
